Praia dos Ossos is a vital part of the Buzios' history. Come and listen to stories while you enjoy the contrasting scenery of Ossos beach.

Praia dos Ossos was once a major processing industry for hunted whales. Praia dos Ossos or Beach of Bones is so named because of the numerous discarded whale bones that littered the beach of Ossos before whale hunting was finally banned by the government. Another historical fact that adds to the infamy of the name Praia dos Ossos is when the Portuguese massacred the local Indian population because of their continuing friendship and smuggling trade with the French. At that time, Brazil wood was very valuable and the French made it a point to take control of the logging industry by organizing the pirates operating near the shores of Praia dos Ossos.

Whatever Praia dos Ossos was in the dim past, the sands of Ossos beach show no signs of the violent goings on that happened here some centuries ago. Today, Ossos beach is one of the most popular beaches in Buzios. Considering that Buzios has 23 beaches, being cited as one of the best is certainly an indication of what Praia dos Ossos has to offer.

Consider the fine and soft grained sand that gently envelopes the undersides of your feet as you traverse the whole of Praia dos Ossos. Off the shore, small boats conveniently await you to transport you to other beaches in Buzios. On the landward side, a cobble stone road runs parallel to the beach with shops, restaurants, cafes, bars, hotels and pousadas to the other side. Also to be found here is the Igreja de Sant'Ana. The Sant'Ana is the oldest church here in Buzios. On the sands of Praia dos Ossos itself is a ship wreck that houses a small kiosk selling refreshments.

Praia dos Ossos is the point of entry for two isolated beaches in Buzios. To the right of Ossos beach are Azeda and Azedinha beaches which can be accessed by a path through some of Buzios' greenery. Without Ossos beach, access to Azeda and Azedinha can only be made by boat. To the left of Praia dos Ossos is Armacao beach. It was Ossos beach and Armacao beach that served as primary whaling and smuggling points before Portuguese authorities brought Buzios under total control.

Facilities near Praia dos Ossos are limited to those found in nearby restaurants. There are plenty of trees to provide shade. These trees offer a beautiful contrast with their green leaves and orange red flowers. Together with the blue waters of Praia dos Ossos, this cove is a sight to behold from the veranda of a house or hotel nearby.
